Project : Lets Face it
Client : Oxfam / Mc Connells
The Brief

Oxfam prioritized the Global Climate Crisis as their most urgent cause, and picked the Copenhagen summit as the key place to make an impact, launching their “Let’s Face It” campaign to rally the public. McConnels Integrated asked us to build an application that would create an engaging experience for people who signed a petition, but could also promote itself through viral marketing. It needed to run on the Oxfam Ireland website and create a database of names on their server. It also had to be able to run remotely on computers that were not connected to the internet, but collect content which could be added to the database.

Our Thinking

We felt that adding a name to the database should be novel and satisfying for users. It should also encourage people to share their experience with friends, and allow them to mingle with others who had signed the petition.

What we did

We built a Flash front-end application that sat in their site and connected to a database on their server. What visitors saw was a silhouetted image of a man that was gradually becoming filled with names as people signed the petition. Each name revealed another small part of the image, but also triggered a change in the background image, going from a harsh desert landscape to a lush healthy one. Visitors were able to return to the site and use a search feature built into the app to find their name and view it as a ‘zoomed in’ section of the image. The app also encouraged each user to add three new emails into the app each time they visited, and those three people were sent an invitation to sign the petition. A standalone version was built for events such as the Dun Loaghaire Festival of World Cultures, which didn’t require an internet connection and allowed the Oxfam staff to dump data onto their server each

Results

The site performed beyond the campaign goals by adding over 11,000 names before the Copenhagen deadline. Even though the summit leaders didn’t make the requested changes, Oxfam now has an active group that they regularly communicate with via email and Facebook. The fight goes on!
